How to Extend the Life of your Mechanical Seals

A mechanical seal will rarely fail due to age, but rather through the faces wearing excessively. However, there are actions you can undertake in order to extend the lifespan and improve the performance of your existing mechanical seal.  

Ensure your seal is lubricated

Mechanical seals should not be allowed to dry out in order to avoid the excessive need to repair the seal. Lubrication between the faces of a mechanical seal is vital for the effective running of the seal, ensuring the smooth movement of the faces as they rotate against each other. As lubrication reduces the effect of friction between the faces, if a mechanical seal is running dry, the seal is at danger of overheating, which could dry the seal out further. A dry mechanical seal is at danger of cracking, causing the overall failure of the seal.

Prevent vibration

Some vibration is part of the day to day running of your mechanical seal and pump mechanism. Vibration on your mechanical seal can cause the seal to become misaligned, as well as cause excessive damage to the O-ring surface, a loosening of drive collar screws, a loss of lubrication between the seal faces, and overall wear and tear.

Clean out all pipework

When installing your mechanical seal, it is vital that all your pipework is cleaned and flushed out in order to ensure that no contaminated material comes into contact with your seal, which could  damage the faces and cause the seal to become less effective.
