Applications of Mechanical Seals

Applications of Mechanical Seals

Simply put, mechanical seals prevent leakage of fluid used within a vessel or machine from leaking into the outside environment. They prevent overall environmental contamination, as well as maintain the overall efficiency of the machine. Mechanical seals are utilised in a variety of sectors, including the automotive, food and beverage, aerospace, industrial, residential, printing and publishing, and marine sectors. Common applications of mechanical seals include within pumps, agitators, and mixers, but they are also utilised within gas seals and cryogenic seals.

Selecting the correct mechanical seal for your application is vital in order to ensure the efficient performance of your pumps, whilst preventing the material being housed from leaking. For example, an unbalanced mechanical seal is the correct seal when a pump is functioning at low pressures. However, high pressure applications require balanced seals, which also perform better when subjected to higher temperatures. Cartridge seals are often easier to install than component seals, as they arrive ready-built, and they also require less maintenance. However, they are also more expensive than other types of seals, which limits the applications they are used within.

In addition to selecting the correct seal, you must also select the correct seal material, as this will help the overall longevity of your seal, and help prevent excess leakage and unnecessary repairs and downtime. Tekhniseal manufactures seals from a variety of materials including carbon, silicon carbide, tungsten carbide, bronze, PTFE, and stainless steel.
